Hon. Prime Minister’s Meeting at the PALM10 Fiji – Japan Bilateral Summit

Hon. Sitiveni L. Rabuka, Prime Minister of the Republic of Fiji, held an audience with H.E. Fumio Kishida, Prime Minister of Japan, on Wednesday, 17 July 2024, at the Office of the Prime Minister of Japan, promoting Fiji and Japan’s bilateral interests along the agenda of the 10th Pacific Islands Leaders’ Meeting (PALM10).

During the bilateral, the Prime Minister acknowledged the opportunities provided by the Government of Japan since inception of diplomatic relation and for continuing to strengthen ties in the region through the 2050 Blue Pacific Strategy.

The Government of Japan has continued to promote bilateral cooperation with Fiji since the establishment of diplomatic relation in 1970 providing a total of development assistance worth over USD 1.6 billion to-date.

Prime Minister Rabuka also provided an update in the signing of the Memorandum of Cooperation in Emergency Warning Satellite System using QZSS, and the Memorandum of Cooperation on Trade and Investment Promotion between the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) and Investment Fiji.

Japan’s efforts were also acknowledged in assisting Fiji’s infrastructural needs in the critical sectors such as healthcare, education, fisheries, aviation, and disaster management.

In the region, the Hon. Prime Minister commended Japan’s commitment to a “Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP)” and expressed his sentiments on the Ocean of Peace Concept towards a peaceful Blue Pacific, as a regional strategy to counter growing tension within the region and globally.

Both the Prime Ministers were supported by their respective Senior and official delegates from the Government of Fiji and the Government of Japan.
